There was a time in my life when I desperately wanted things to change.
Like many people, I started with what was easiest to see.
A new haircut.
A better-fitted suit.
A different coffee shop instead of my usual morning routine.
For a while, it felt exciting. Fresh. Motivating.
I even thought, “I’m becoming a better version of myself.”
But before long, everything slipped back to the way it had always been.
Not because those changes were wrong.
But because I was only changing at the surface level.
Perhaps you’ve experienced something similar.
- You changed your environment, but your emotions stayed the same.
- You promised yourself to become more disciplined, only to fall back into old patterns.
- You learned new skills, yet still hesitated to take action.
Eventually you wonder:
“Why have I worked so hard… yet my life hasn’t really changed?”
That question led me to one of the most powerful frameworks I’ve ever learned in coaching and NLP: Robert Dilts’ Logical Levels.
This model explains why people often feel stuck and more importantly, how lasting transformation happens from the inside out.
The Six Levels of Change
Imagine your life operating through six interconnected levels.
- Environment – Where and when?
- Behavior – What do I do?
- Capabilities – How do I do it?
- Beliefs & Values – Why do I do it?
- Identity – Who am I?
- Purpose – Who do I serve? What am I here for?
One of the biggest insights I discovered is this:
You can’t create lasting change by only changing the lower levels.
Real transformation begins at the deepest level – your purpose, and gradually reshapes everything above it.
Let’s explore each level.
1. Environment
This is where most of us begin.
We change our office.
Move to a new city.
Join another company.
Start a different routine.
Our environment certainly influences us.
But have you ever noticed…
…you move somewhere new, yet carry the same mindset?
…you leave one unhealthy relationship only to find yourself in another that feels strangely familiar?
Your environment often reflects what’s happening inside you.
When your inner world doesn’t change, life tends to recreate familiar patterns.
2. Behavior
Behavior is simply what you do every day.
Earlier in my career, I managed sales teams.
Many conversations focused on questions like:
- What did you do yesterday?
- How many clients did you meet?
- Where did you go this week?
These are important questions.
But they rarely uncover the real reason someone isn’t progressing.
More powerful questions are:
- Why did you choose that approach?
- Which capability would make the biggest difference?
- What’s preventing you from performing at your best?
Many people stay busy.
Few become truly effective.
3. Capabilities
This level is about skills.
Communication.
Decision-making.
Emotional intelligence.
Leadership.
The good news?
Skills can always be learned.
But sometimes the obstacle isn’t capability.
It’s confidence.
Ask yourself:
- What skill have I been postponing because I don’t feel ready?
- Am I truly lacking the skill—or simply doubting myself?
Sometimes we don’t fail because we can’t.
We stop because we believe we can’t.
4. Beliefs & Values
Beliefs are the invisible operating system behind our decisions.
Growing up, one of my strongest values was learning.
Alongside it came a belief:
“Success comes from studying hard.”
That belief helped me immensely.
It encouraged curiosity, continuous learning, and personal growth.
But it also had a hidden cost.
For years, I found myself judging people who didn’t value learning as much as I did.
That’s when I realized something important.
Every belief both empowers and limits us.
Questions worth reflecting on:
- Which belief has protected you in the past but may now be holding you back?
- What have you accepted as “truth” without ever questioning it?
5. Identity
Identity shapes every decision you make.
We don’t simply act.
We act according to who we believe we are.
“I am disciplined.”
“I always procrastinate.”
“I’m not confident.”
“I’m not a leader.”
These aren’t just descriptions.
They’re stories.
And over time, those stories become self-fulfilling.
Ask yourself:
- What story have I been telling myself every day?
- If that story no longer serves me, am I willing to let it go?
6. Purpose
This is the deepest level.
Long before I became a coach, I often found myself asking:
“Why am I here?”
“What is the purpose of my life?”
At the time, I didn’t have clear answers.
I only knew one thing.
I wanted to help people live with more passion and discover their full potential.
Years later, I realized that was my purpose.
Once my purpose became clear…
Everything else started aligning naturally.
I knew who I wanted to become.
I knew which skills I needed.
I chose to study NLP, coaching, and human development.
Coaching isn’t my destination.
It’s simply the vehicle that allows me to live my purpose every day.
Perhaps you could ask yourself:
- If fear disappeared, how would you contribute to the world?
- What gift are you here to offer?
Two Ways to Use the Six Levels
When you feel stuck, work from the bottom up.
- What is happening around me?
- What am I doing?
- How am I doing it?
- Why am I doing it?
- Who am I becoming?
- Who do I truly want to serve?
When you’re ready for transformation, work from the top down.
Start with your purpose.
Clarify your identity.
Examine your beliefs.
Develop the capabilities you need.
Choose new behaviors.
Then design an environment that supports your growth.
A Final Thought
Perhaps you don’t need to change everything today.
Maybe you only need to change one question.
Instead of asking:
“What should I do?”
Try asking:
“Who am I becoming?”
And…
“What is truly guiding my life?”
Because in the end…
Your life isn’t determined by your circumstances.
It’s shaped by the level of awareness from which you live.
When that level changes…
Everything else begins to change from the inside out.
If You’re Ready to Go Deeper
Reading an article can spark new insights.
But lasting transformation often begins through conversation.
If something in this article resonates with you…
If you know you’re capable of more but feel stuck…
Or if you’re simply looking for greater clarity about your next chapter…
I’d be honored to support you.
In a coaching session, I won’t tell you what to do.
Instead, I’ll help you uncover the answers, strengths, and direction that already exist within you.
Your next breakthrough may begin with a single conversation.
I look forward to meeting you.
